Rd3 Motostar – Knockhill

back JJ

TeamJJ make the 405 mile trip North across the border for the Scottish round at Knockhill – there was much speculation that the track was in great order following a complete track overhaul – new tarmac ready for 2 wheels burning action!

With the weather gods in our favour – which as I’m sure most will agree, it was an unusual forecast for the Scottish hills set for non stop blissful sunshine.

Friday FP1 and FP2: It all went to plan, we all know with the short 1.3 mile track the lap times are always going to be close.  Finishing the day in the top 3 and bang on race pace. Was happy with the set-up with a few little final tweaks we were ready for qualifying.

Oh and the track by the way was great – I only rode it once before last year and found it a real bumpy tricky little buggar … this was like  completely new circuit, all classes were going out each session breaking the lap records!

Saturday: – Qualifying: With a 30 minute session our plan was to head out on the already scrubbed tyre and get a good early lap time in and come in for a fresh rear for the last 10 mins or so and push for pole position – unfortunately not able to further my front row 3rd due to a red flag in the last few minutes and very busy sectors on track… but settled for 3rd and happy.

Race 1 (18 laps): Saturday afternoon continued to be a hot day. From the start I broke away with the other front riders as a group of 4 quickly gaining a 1.5 second gap from the field.

The pace was fast with the lap record being snatched near on every other lap from either of us at the front as we continued to battle for the race win. With 3 laps remaining I tried to pull the pin and took the lead of the group, which proved to be a tough task sifting through the back markers, on the final lap it came to be myself and team mate Jake Archer having a 2 horse race to the line, I completely missed the apex on the final corner not getting the drive I would want and missed the race win by just 0.055 seconds!!!!

JJ across the line

Sunday Race 2 (22 laps): Remaining 3rd on the grid from race1’s lap times, it was once again game on the final time of asking the Moto3 machines for the weekend. It was pretty much a carbon copy of race1 – taking part in a 4 group – soon to be 3 riders as McManus crashed out on lap 8. It was myself, Jake #2 and Storm #79 that continued to battle and once again sweep through the blue flagged back markers – unfortunately as I gained on a back marker quicker than I expected on slightly off the race line going into Clarks corner I lost the front end and crashed out on lap16… Absolutely gutted!

It’s a shame to miss out on championship points – as a racer you’re never going to settle for a safe position unless you’re miles apart and holding the guaranteed place. Yes it’s frustrating but it’s racing and it is also still early days in the championship with 6 rounds and 12 races to go… Lets do it #JJ55

Thanks to all of TeamJJ – Dad, Tony, Anna and Wes along with guest appearance of Jez to keep us laughing our heads off throughout the 5 night trip!

To all sponsors and supporters it does not ever go un-noticed – BIG THANKS for joining the TeamJJ journey.
